Immediate/Emergency Care for a Knocked-Out Tooth

What to Do If You Knocked Out a Tooth

1

Assess the Situation

If the tooth has been completely knocked out, it's crucial to remain calm. If you experience loss of consciousness, nausea, or disorientation, seek medical attention at a hospital emergency room immediately.
2

Find the Tooth

Look for the tooth and handle it carefully. Hold the tooth by its crown (the white part), avoiding the root.
3

Reinsert the Tooth (if possible)

If the tooth is adult (permanent), gently place it back into its socket. Do not attempt to reinsert a baby tooth!
4

Alternative Storage Options

If you cannot reinsert the tooth, place it in a container of milk. If milk is not available, saline or your saliva can be used as alternatives, but milk is the best option.
5

Seek Dental Care Immediately

Time is critical for the successful reattachment of a knocked-out tooth. Teeth replanted within the first 15 minutes have the highest chance of survival. Contact your dentist immediately for an emergency appointment.
