Fissure sealants

Fissure sealants are plastic coatings placed on the occlusal or chewing surface of your back teeth in order to prevent tooth decay. The grooves in the tooth surface are called pits and fissures. They can be deep and narrow, making them very difficult to access and clean. These fissures are sometimes smaller than even a single toothbrush bristle. When plaque begins to accumulate in these areas, the bacteria will attack the tooth’s enamel which can cause cavities to develop. So, by placing sealants, it provides an extra protection by creating a smooth surface over the fissured area.

Over 75% of tooth decay begins in these fissures! It is still important to continue maintaining good oral hygiene even after getting fissure sealants.

Do note that fissure sealants are not meant to last forever. Over time, they will start to wear down that’s why they need to be checked for any wear or chipping. We suggest that you get it checked with your 6 monthly regular dental examinations.

What To Expect From Your Child’s Dental Visit:

But it’s normal to have questions about what will happen, and understanding our procedures allows you to answer their questions before you arrive, too. So, here’s what to expect:

Welcome Discussion:

When you arrive, your dentist will greet you and your child and discuss any concerns or pains they may be experiencing in an easy way that they understand.

Examination:

After our discussion, the dentist will begin examining the patient's mouth. They will check their teeth and gums, including tongue and cheeks, for any signs of cracks, wobbly teeth or any abnormalities.

Cleaning:

If necessary, a dentist will typically proceed with a general cleaning of any plaque or stains that may have built up.

X-ray and Fluoride:

For first visits or 6-monthly monitoring, your dentist may take X-rays and intraoral photos. They will then offer a fluoride rinse once the scaling and cleaning are completed.

Next Steps:

Your dentist will discuss any changes or areas of concern they may have noticed, as well as advise you of some preventative next steps that your child can implement to take care of their teeth at home.

The Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS) provides dental services for children aged between 0-17 years with access to $1052 over a 2-year calendar period.

It includes general dental treatments like cleans, x-rays, fillings, fissure sealants, extractions, and root canals. They do NOT cover any orthodontic or cosmetic treatments.
