Children Dentistry

In Niddrie Dental Clinic, we know the importance of having good oral hygiene from a young age. Having poor oral hygiene can lead to some problems in the future such as; tooth decay or periodontal disease. That’s why our trained and experienced team is here to look after your child’s teeth from their very first visit. It is recommended that they have regular dental check-ups to help maintain healthy and strong teeth for the future.

First visit to Niddrie Dental Clinic?

We recommend bringing in your child when their first teeth show or around the age of 12 months. You wouldn’t want to wait for a problem to arise and then book an appointment.

It can be scary and nerve-wracking for some (especially children) when it comes to visiting the dentist. At Niddrie Dental Clinic, we always take it one step at a time and ensure your child is comfortable.

Tips for positive dental visits

Bring your child with you for dental visits so they can see what is done and even get used to just sitting on the dental chair.

Arrive a little earlier than the actual appointment time to let your child get familiarized with the dental environment.

Prepare your child for what to expect on their visit to the dentist – the unknown can be scary.

Read books or watch videos that are dental-themed to make your child feel more confident and comfortable about their own visits.

Make dental appointments for your child earlier during the day so that they are not tired.

Bring something that’s comforting for your child, for example, their favorite toy or blanket just in case they need an extra distraction.

In Niddrie Dental Clinic, we have coloring activities, books to read, and children’s shows to watch on the television to help them relax. They even get stickers and a child pack at the end of their first visit!

Fissure sealants

Fissure sealants are plastic coatings placed on the occlusal or chewing surface of your back teeth in order to prevent tooth decay. The grooves in the tooth surface are called pits and fissures. They can be deep and narrow, making them very difficult to access and clean. These fissures are sometimes smaller than even a single toothbrush bristle. When plaque begins to accumulate in these areas, the bacteria will attack the tooth’s enamel which can cause cavities to develop. So, by placing sealants, it provides an extra protection by creating a smooth surface over the fissured area.

Over 75% of tooth decay begins in these fissures! It is still important to continue maintaining good oral hygiene even after getting fissure sealants.

Do note that fissure sealants are not meant to last forever. Over time, they will start to wear down that’s why they need to be checked for any wear or chipping. We suggest that you get it checked with your 6 monthly regular dental examinations.
